"Detachment is not that you should own nothing. It means that nothing should own you.

There's an amazing book called "Bhaja Govindam" by Adi Shankaracharya. In one of a study sessions conducted at Chinmaya Mission, I was asked to speak about the 8th Shloka form the 30 shlokas of the book. It was an amazing session and I got to learn a lot while preparing for the session. I would like to post my script here:

Detachment का मतलब है अपनी ज़िन्दगी से स्वार्थपरता और अपेक्षाओं को दूर करना| It is the removal of the feelings of selfishness, demands and expectations. To elaborate on this, I'll narrate a small excerpt from an article written by Sudha Murthy.

From Vedanta to Ike-bana, from healing to yoga, I learnt everything. And since my husband was a 24/7 workaholic, it was all the more necessary for my survival, my happiness and for maintaining peace.

I became detached in the sense that I did not expect anyone to reciprocate to my affection. Friends, if you let go of the ones you love, they will never go away. My children also started visiting me more often and I loved this.

Partner is someone we look upto for comfort. Child is someone who looks upto us for support.

Shankracharya says we should maintain a dispossess attitude towards our possessions even while we have them and are enjoying them. NO.......Attachments need to go; not the objects of attachments. Problem is with our attitude, not with people or things. अगर हम सबको analyze करें तो हम देखेंगे कि जो भी हमारे साथ जुड़े हुए हैं- they are individuals with their own distinct personalities, life-goals and aspirations. We don't have much right to interfere with this pattern and impose our will on them. Accept them for what they are, not what you hope to receive from them. Then you see, how wonderful your life becomes.

Same lies with objects.

So do your duties lovingly, love everyone but remember......NO ADDICTION! A person who truly detaches, becomes a lion-hearted person, whose strength can never be deterred.

Ma...Our Walking Miracle!

Ma:   My mom is a walking miracle. An epitome of simplicity, I take pride in what she is. Sometimes, I feel if I become half as strong, as talented as she is, I would be a class apart!   In my teenage days, my friends used to find reasons for me to host a party. Reason was simple….my mom’s culinary skills and warm hospitality. She was too good with her cooking, presentation and served with love. When we used to get soft drinks where ever we went, she used to impress us with her ‘kairi-pudina’, ‘bel sherbat’, fresh tomato juice etc. Her mouth watering chaats with home made papri and raj-kachori have satiated so many taste buds. Master Chef was not aired those days otherwise she would have been a winner with a big margin. Not only mine and my father’s friends, but my in-laws family can vouch for her creativity. While hosting dinners for her loving samdhis, she would make sure, in an array of snacks, no snack is repeated the second time. Her daal halwa was to die f...

Karma Yoga# Bhagawad Gira# chapter 3# paraphrased

Bhagwad Geeta Chapter 3 Paraphrased: Chapter 3, Karma Yoga “Karma means You are the Maker of your life. When you truly understand Karma, you realize you are responsible for everything in your life. Every moment, you perform action- physically, mentally, emotionally and energy-wise. Each action creates a certain memory. That is Karma”.  In Bhagwad Geeta, Krishna emphasis the most on Karma Yoga. He says there are two paths:   Path of Knowledge   Path of Action On hearing this Arjuna decides to choose the path of knowledge and tells Krishna that it’s better to go to the Himalayas and start meditating and give up war. Krishna then explains its difficult to give up action because each thing we do, involves a bit of activity. Even the simple work like eating, drinking, sleeping or breathing also involves action. Moreover, when the action (here, it is the war) is in the mind and we are meditating, we’ll never be at peace. The Path of knowledge is for the thinkers- the ...
